Pediatrics

GENERAL OBJECTIVES

The Residency Training Program of the Department of Pediatrics is geared towards the delivery of quality pediatric care; to train and develop professional and skilled pediatrician; to meet the requirements needed for accrediation of the Philippines Pediatric Society.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

The residency training program is a 3-year training program. the resident will be assigned on a rotation basis to the private service. Charity service as well on go on duty in the Emergency.

COMPETENCIES EXPECTED OF A RESIDENT AT THE END OF THE THREE YEAR PROGRAM

1. The resident is expected to handle all general pediatric cases on their own.

2. The resident is able to recognize and manage abnormal pediatric conditions in the nursery. E.g. Prematurity, Sepsis, Jeandice of newborn, etc.

3. The resident should be proficient in diagnosting and managing pediatric emergency conditions.

4. 3rd year resident should be able to recognize priorities in the management of the acute or critically ill patients.

5. The resident should be able to perform special skills and procedures such as lumbar taps, umbilical cannulation, exchange tranfusion, endotracheal intubation, etc.

6. The resident must be able to qualify to the written and oral examinations required by the Philippine Pediatric Society.

THE CRITERIA FOR ACCEPTANCE OF THE PROGRAM

The following criteria should be fulfilled before an applicant can be accepted into the program:

1. He/She must have a degree in Medicine and must have finished internship training in an institution accredited by the Association of Philippine Medical Collge (APMC)

2. He/She must pass the examination given by the Board of Medicine of the Professional Regulation Commission of the Republic of the Philippines and possess a license to practice medicine in the Philippines.

3. He/She must pass the qualifying examination and interview given by the Residency Training Committee of the department.

4. He/She must have good moral character as attested by persons endorsing the applicant.

5. He/She must have completed a period of pre-residency training during which time his/her performance shall be evaluated by the department Residency Training Committee.

BOARD AND LODGING

- Meals 3x/day (midnight and snack for those on duty)

- Uniforms (2 blazers throughout Residency)

- Vacation Leave (2 weeks a year)
