The Chinese General Hospital and Medical Center Department of Surgery commits itself to the pursuit of excellence in continuing surgical education and training of its staff, rendering humane surgical care to the community, contributing to the progress of Philippine Surgery through research and attaining national and international recognition on a platform of moral and professional integrity and respect for human life and dignity.

The Department affirms its task in the development and formation of competent & compassionate surgeons who are committed to health care delivery of global standards & in accordance with the needs & goals of the nation.
 

VISION

By 2020 on the centennial year of CGHMC, the Department of Surgery shall be the premiere surgical Institution among private hospitals in the Philippines.  It shall have achieved the following:

•    The undisputed leader in general surgery training among non-university institution.

o    A  passing rate in the PBS oral and written exam not lower than 95% 
o    100% of its graduates board certified

•    Excellent credentials of the staff, 100% of which are fellows and diplomates of their respective specialties
•    Recognized leader in cancer and minimally invasive surgery.
•    Regularly conducting world-class postgraduate programs in clinical sciences. 
•    An approved fellowship in surgical oncology
•    An approved training program in urology and anesthesia
•    Linkages to leading surgical department schools abroad for exchange of staff, fellows and residents for collaborative works.

FACILITIES
 

The Chinese General Hospital and Medical Center Operating and Recovery Room Complex is situated on the 2nd floor of the old Building, equipped with state-of-the art facilities and well-trained medical & nursing staff. The recent trends in laparoscopy have been acquired by the hospital. The department also has a Charity Division which caters to indigents patients. A total of 20 ward bed capacity divided into male and female patients. The department also has its minor operating room intended for minor procedures like excisions and circumcision.

RESIDENCY TRAINING PROGRAM

 

GENERAL OBJECTIVE

The Residency Training program of the department of Surgery of the Chinese General Hospital and Medical Center is primarily geared towards the production of General Surgeons equipped with sound scientific surgical judgment, excellent technical skills both in rural and urban settings, morally upright principles and humane and ethnical attitudes.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

The General Surgery Residency in an intensive five year program based on a modified pyramid system of promotion and graduation.

Among the Fifth Year Residents, one is chosen on the basis of previous performance and leadership potential and appointed as the Chief Surgical Resident. The Chief Surgical Resident has the district privilege to operate on any service patient in any section / subspecialty service he may choose. He carries out both administrative and supervisory over the rest of the resident Staff.

THE WHOLE RESIDENCY TRAINING INVOLVES ROTATIONS IN THE FOLLOWING SERVICES:

1. General Surgery

2. Specialty Surgery - Rotations in General Surgery include assignment in the Emergency room, wards and outpatient clinic. Special arrangement of the schedules of rotation are made depending on the needs of the service and the intent of the residents trainees, especially those who intend to pursue training in subspecialty fields.

3. Pediatric Surgery                                                                       3 months

4. Orthopedics, TCVS, Urology, Plastic,                                     2-3 months

and Reconstructive Surgery, ENT and Neurosurgery              5 months

5. Radiology, ICU and Endoscopy                                                4 months

6. Trauma (MCHG-PGHM Consortium)                                      6-9 months

REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION

  • Duly accomplished application form together with the credentials required by the Chinese General Hospital of the Department of Medical Education
  • Certificate of completion of post-graduate Internship.
  • Photocopy of the National Medical Board rating. Satisfactory grade obtained in the written examination given by the Residency Training Committee
  • Satisfactory rating in the interview given by the Residency Training Committee of the Department
  • (2) Recommendation letter of good moral character.
  • BOARD AND LODGING

    - Meals 3x/day (midnight and snack for those on duty)

    - Uniforms (2 blazers throughout Residency)

    - Vacation Leave (2 weeks a year)
